About James Combs

Hi. I am James Combs. I am a wearer of many music industry hats - Head of Sync at Laurel Canon Music Services (the licensing agency I run with music supervisor Gary Calamar), Music Supervisor and Coordinator, artist, songwriter, live concert promoter, and producer.

I started my artist life in the college rock band Arson Garden in Bloomington, Indiana, which gave me a lot of interesting music adventures including the chance to make an album at Prince's Paisley Park studios, play at the Lollapalooza Festival, perform a Peel Session for the BBC, and make albums for multiple record labels.

In spite of all the cool experiences, I felt like I was never quite able to figure out how to actually make a living as a musician until I moved to Los Angeles two decades ago and began working with DJ/Music Supervisor Chris Douridas at KCRW and learning about sync licensing. Placing my songs in TV shows and ads via the music supervisors I met through KCRW was a "eureka" moment for me. "Oh, so THIS is how you actually make money playing music..."

So in 2011 I formed Laurel Canon Music Services with DJ/Music Supervisor Gary Calamar to expand my reach and to help my musician friends also start earning money through sync. Laurel Canon is now thirteen years old and has a roster of artists like Maria Taylor, Dave Alvin, Freedy Johnston, Abby Posner, and more. Our primary area of expertise is in Americana and Country music - the kind of music I play - but we work with independent pop, hip hop, R&B, dance, and rock artists as well.
